The Water Supply Challenge is an exciting, award-winning educational resource for schools. Originally designed by Thames Water and redeveloped with Anglian Water, it challenges students to design, build and commission a water supply network.

The Water Supply Challenge simulates a real-life engineering project. Students work in teams to plan, buy materials, construct and circulate water through a water supply network. They make decisions on the choice of route, customer needs, cost, environmental impact, health and safety, and public relations to successfully supply customers' water.

Plan, organise and make

After being shown a plan of a typical area in the UK, students plan a suitable network of pipes capable of carrying water to a school, an eco-town, an old town, a farm, an industrial estate and a hospital, as cheaply as possible. Before students start construction they are required to complete planning and ordering sheets.

Throughout the planning stage, students are asked to respond to various situations which require them to check and possibly amend their plans.

A cross-curricular resource

The Water Supply Challenge is aimed at Key Stage 3 to adult, and can be adapted to suit upper Key Stage 2. It covers many areas of the curriculum:

- Mathematics: numeracy skills needed to check budgets

- Science: pupils are made aware of water pressure and flow rates

- PSHCE: the social effects of a building project on a local society are discussed

- Geography: the network must be planned with sensitivity to the local environment

- Design & Technology: the network layout needs to be functional, efficient, and cost-effective

logo is included on the water containers, support material, storage case and game board tube.
