Surface Drainage Model
Designed by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, the Surface Drainage Model shows the surface drainage problems caused by housing construction and deforestation.
The model is very easy to set up and use. There are three inserts which can be interchanged to give different drainage effects.
Water is poured onto the top of the hill, and the reservoirs are measured to see how much water is absorbed by the hill and how much runs down into the village.
Greener areas (grass or grass/trees) absorb more water – with less run-off to the village. Paved areas absorb less water – with more run-off to the village.
1. Grass and Trees
The majority of the rainfall is absorbed in the hillside, with minimal run-off to the village.
2. Grass
Less rainfall is absorbed into the hillside, resulting in more run-off to the village.
3. Housing
Very little rainfall is absorbed into the hillside, with the run-off causing severe flooding in the village.
