RES takes to the classroom with renewable energy kits

EcoStyle’s interactive renewable energy kits are proving a popular resource with Renewable Energy Systems (RES), the Kings Langley-based renewable energy developer and their education specialist Sandie Taylor.

Sandie spends time at their educational centre working with students helping to raise awareness about renewable energy and the environment and develop skills and knowledge.

She has found EcoSyle’s kits very beneficial in helping bring to life the practicalities of using renewable energy.

Sandie said: ‘The kits are proving to be a very useful resource for schools. The wind turbine kits and solar photovoltaic kits are particularly useful for example at Key Stage 3 level and fit especially well into the National Curriculum units 9i, and 7j which cover "Energy and Electricity" and "Electrical Circuits".

'‘The blades on the wind turbine kits can produce some really interesting sessions with the students working with the voltmeter to determine which number of blades produces the greatest source of energy. This always provokes lots of discussion as well and we don’t hide the fact that the blades on a full wind turbine are 40feet long, expensive to transport and therefore not cost efficient to have 6 blades rather than 3.

It’s good for the students to understand the business angle as well as the environmental issues.'‘We also run workshops experimenting with the angles of the blades, looking at wind direction and what is most effective. Taking a kinaesthetic approach and so learning through doing is a far more effective way for the students to understand energy concepts than merely by reading from a book or even looking at pictures on a computer screen.’

Working in the industrial, public and commercial sectors, RES is one of the world's leading renewable energy developers working across the globe to develop, construct and operate projects that contribute to their goal of a sustainable future.
